Online Therapy
Like my other clients, you might be feeling the need for support now more than ever.
Online therapy gives us the ability to continue to protect each other and help flatten the curve, without taking away your support. Telephone and video counseling sessions allow us to stay connected even while we practice social distancing.
Why Telehealth?
Studies have confirmed that telehealth is just as effective as in-person sessions, and offers specific advantages for those of you who don’t have the time to commute, or prefer working from a space where you feel safe and comfortable, like your own home. If you have a quiet, private space at your office, you can conveniently schedule your appointment during your lunch hour without having to leave work.
For parents who desire extra support and tools for themselves or their children, online therapy can deliver. Even though it seems like it might be awkward or hard to emotionally connect via video chat, therapy set in your own home can provide your child or teen with an environment they recognize, feel safe in, and can share with me. Pets can join in (nobody minds a dog in the background!), you don’t have to worry about running late, making sure everybody has their socks and shoes on, or finding a parking spot. We can talk right from your couch.
What would a session look like?
Once we get our session started, it’s very similar to in-person therapy. We’re going to be flexible! Does your little guy want to show me their favorite stuffed animal? Did something just happen at dinner that you need to vent about before we dig in? We can cover that! The details matter and being welcome in your space gives me a better understanding of what you need right now. Telehealth doesn’t mean we can’t have a meaningful conversation or that we’re not working on our goals.
What happens if we get cut off?
That can be super-stressful if that happens if we’re in the middle of something deep or serious! To back up our sessions if that happens, make sure your phone is charged and that I have your most up-to-date phone number so I can call you and we can continue. Just because we lose the internet connection doesn’t mean we need to lose the flow or impact of your session.
What about other interruptions?
Everyone is doing the best we can right now, right? We’re all human and interruptions are going to happen - your cat jumps on the keyboard, your partner has a question, you have to help the kids. I get it and we can resume the session once you’re all set. But I do recommend having a plan, which I can help you with, to stay focused and be ready for sessions and keep boundaries around our time together.
What happens once things go back to “normal”?
It does seem like the world is opening back up now; with that comes increased traffic, more activities for the kids, and maybe the end of working from home for the adults. As life gets a bit busier for everyone, getting help for you and your family should stay simple and convenient. Online counseling sessions will continue to be offered to all clients so that you can continue to receive the support you deserve.
