Anxiety Treatment
Overcome the Overwhelm
Life is hard enough without dealing with ongoing stress and anxiety on top of everything else. We may love the people in our lives with everything we have, and still struggle to connect, engage, or not take behaviors personally.
Anxiety can leave you feeling unappreciated, unfulfilled, and drained. To the world, you might look like you’re checking off all the items on the To Do list, taking care of the kids, or regularly checking in with friends and family. But inside, you’re struggling. Your anxiety symptoms could be depleting your ability to feel productive, inspired, and in charge of your life. Anxiety can result in beating yourself up for not trying harder, or doing more. It can feel like a struggle to just survive the day, much less actually enjoy it.
When anxiety seems to be taking a starring role in your life, what do you do? Where do you go to feel more fulfilled and supported in relationships, to have a better work-life balance, and ultimately, to take back control of your life?
Some of us might experience an even more intense response to stressful experiences, which can lead to anxiety attacks, nightmares, or constant fight or flight reactions. Being this affected can make us feel out of control and isolated. We may think: ‘Why do I experience panic attacks or PTSD when this other person doesn’t even seem to struggle?’ But no matter how unique our experience is with anxiety, we’re not alone.
In the United States, more than 40 million adults (or about 18 percent) suffer from anxiety disorders, according to data from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.1 And we suffer for so many reasons: Fast-paced lives, the pressure to keep up with (or measure up to) everyone and everything, unattainable expectations placed on women and mothers, or the current political climate.
Maybe you try to address your challenges as your own anxiety coach, with self-care or a stack of self-help books. Or maybe you think that things will “settle down” with time. Or maybe you downplay or outright dismiss your struggle, because you have so much that needs to get done.
But ignoring your symptoms can end up working against you—not acknowledging a problem doesn’t make that problem disappear. The first step toward true healing and empowerment for anyone who struggles with anxiety, is to reach out for professional help. You deserve kudos for making it this far. Now imagine how much further you could go with anxiety therapy, a proven method to help you thrive.
A lot of people think that getting rid of anxiety boils down to figuring out how to control their emotions, or “keeping calm.”
But the reality is that we can’t shut off our emotions like flipping a light switch. Also, emotions are a big, healthy part of the human experience. Being able to sit with our emotions, recognize what sparked them, and feel confident in our ability to handle them, is an important part of healing. As an anxiety counselor, I’ve seen the benefits of therapy in helping people do exactly that.
Therapy gives you a safe space to be heard and to have your experiences validated by another person. In session, you have someone who you can trust with your story and count on to be there for you each time. With the right approach, you can overcome your struggles with anxiety.
The intake process starts with a brief phone consultation where we make sure I’m a good fit for your goals. We will schedule your first appointment, and I will send you the appropriate forms to complete before that first session. In the first session, we’ll go over your paperwork and make any necessary adjustments. Then we’ll hit the ground running, learning more about the anxiety you experience and building the skills to overcome it.
During sessions, I’ll help you recognize the symptoms of your anxiety in order to develop the best strategies for coping with them. I’ll work with you to uncover what might be keeping you stuck, on edge, or feeling stressed. We can explore patterns, relationships, or significant experiences that might factor into your anxiety to determine the best approach and strategies.
Your anxiety treatment will be tailored to your individual needs, background, and goals. I draw on training and techniques from CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), solution-focused, and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to help you feel more grounded, in control, and resilient in your life. Ultimately, each appointment is set on a foundation for growth, and ideally provides a new strategy, understanding, or resource to benefit you outside of our sessions.
But you may still have some hesitation about anxiety treatment...
I don’t have the time.
Between work, home, a partner, kids… Making time for yourself can feel like an unreasonable or even impossible stretch. Interestingly, my clients find that therapy for anxiety has increased their motivation, clarified priorities, and helped them feel more productive and effective in their personal and professional lives. As a result, they feel like they have more time in their schedule, and more energy to tackle the To Do list, have a deep conversation with their partner, or be present with their kids. Plus, our therapy sessions are all online, so you don’t have to worry about the extra time driving and parking can take.
I’m worried that getting therapy for anxiety means something is wrong with me.
It’s easy to confuse having challenges in life with perhaps being “abnormal” or “faulty,” but the truth is that feeling anxious and having the courage to reach out for support, is indicative of your humanity and your strength. Nothing is wrong with you. Instead, seeking therapy means you are healthy enough to recognize a need for support and that you’re worth the investment.
How can I get treatment for anxiety when I don’t even know why I’m feeling like this?
Maybe you think that counseling for anxiety can’t help you with the unknowns of your life. Yet therapy can be a powerful tool to help you begin to understand the source of your anxiety by exploring your experiences and emotions. In session, you have a place where you can be supported and validated in your confusion and restlessness. Therapy is a good start to learn how to manage your anxiety, identify why you’re feeling this way, and thrive.
Let me help you take the next step.
You’ve been strong enough to survive for this long—it’s time to take the next step toward THRIVING. Reach out today. I would love to help you get the balanced, empowered life you deserve.
